Our
Coventry general dentist, Mark Longobardi, D.M.D., not only recommends mouthguards for athletes and casual sports participants, but for TMJ sufferers as well. An expert in his field for over 20 years, Dr. Longobardi knows how necessary tooth protection is and that it goes beyond the situations when you are just at risk playing sports. If you grind or clench your teeth while you sleep, a mouthguard, or bite guard, will reduce symptoms of TMJ problems. Our patients with pre-existing orthodontics or dental work don’t need to be concerned because Dr. Longobardi will find a customized solution for each patient’s individual needs.

After your consultation with our
Coventry general dentist, we will be able to determine whether a mouth guard will properly address your concerns. Mouth guards are protective coverings that are worn in your mouth to protect the teeth from damage. For our patients with biting, clenching, and grinding problems, they are a rather inexpensive solution. For our patients who engage in physical contact sports, such as football, hockey, and boxing, Dr. Longobardi makes a strong recommendation to consider wearing a mouth guard to protect your teeth.
Custom-made in both soft and hard materials, mouthguards can provide a comfortable solution for your situation. Our
Coventry general dentist, as well as our expert staff, are well-equipped to create custom-fitted mouth guards for our sports-playing patients as well as those suffering from TMJ disorder. Although generic mouth guards can be found at many local drugstores and sporting goods stores, Dr. Longobardi does not recommend these stock products since they aren’t custom-fitted and, most likely, will not address the patient’s issues adequately. Many of the store-bought mouth guards are so bulky and uncomfortable that not only do the patient find it hard to breathe while wearing them, but they usually end up not wearing them at all. With the education and expertise of our
Coventry general dentist, our customized mouth guards provide relief to patients suffering from TMJ related symptoms, and provides protection to athletes during their sporting events. Generally made for the patient’s upper teeth, and worn overnight (or during a sporting event for athletes), a properly-fitted mouth guard is just what the doctor ordered.
