There are two basic types of dentures: fixed and removable. Fixed dentures are commonly known as bridges. Removable dentures are broken down further into partial (for when you have only one or a few teeth to replace), and complete (to restore all of teeth on the upper or lower jaw). Dentures are a method of teeth replacement that have been around for a long time. They work well, are more cost-effective than dental implants, and have a long history behind them to ensure your confidence. Here at Longobardi Dental, we are dedicated to helping you maintain your natural teeth for life, if possible. But when that is not possible, our Coventry CT dentist will give you back your complete smile with fixed and removable dentures.
Fixed dentures are held in at the gum line with cement and on either side with anchors. These anchors are held in by drilling the two neighboring teeth, fitting the anchor, and then fixing a crown over them to secure their placement. The advantages are that it won't move around on you, but not everyone feels natural and comfortable wearing fixed dentures. Our Coventry CT dentist will work with you to determine which option is the best for your unique circumstances.
Removable dentures won't cause you to lose any material from your surrounding teeth. And because you can take them out whenever you want, you have greater flexibility and more freedom to clean your gums efficiently. Removable partial dentures are held in with clasps to the neighboring teeth, and with temporary dental adhesive at the gums. The drawback is that your dentures could slide when you eat or speak, and this may leave you feeling less than 100% confident in them. While neither fixed or removable dentures are perfect, each has benefits that are undeniable. Most prominently, they keep your other teeth from shifting, your occlusion (bite) from being thrown out of alignment, and give you a smile that won't have any empty space where a tooth used to be. Furthermore, your chewing will be better and so will your digestion. To get started, schedule an examination and consultation with our Coventry CT dentist.
